Standard Appearance

The "look" of xmcd is immensely configurable. As released, xmcd delivers a classic, elegant appearance, and is frugal with its use of colors so that it may be used on an 8-bitplane display (with limited number of colormap entries). Click the image below to see the full size version.

Customized Appearance

The following shows a highly-customized xmcd. The colors, fonts, pushbutton appearance, and some label text have all been altered. This demonstrates the flexibility of the use of resources in an Motif and X Toolkit Intrinsics based application, such that the concept of "skins" and "themes" can be easily achieved. Note: This configuration is color-intensive. It should be used on a 16-bitplane ("high-color") or better display.

Installation Instructions

1. Download and install xmcd.
2. Change to your $HOME/.xmcdcfg directory, and then unpack the rambo_xmcd.tar.gz file you just downloaded.
3. Edit the XMcd file, read the comments and change the path name to point to your own home directory.
4. Start xmcd and see the effects.
5. Make other changes as you see fit to customize xmcd to your taste. You may also edit the pixmaps/*.xpm files or create new ones for your use. A utility such as xpaint or gimp may be used for this purpose. Your imagination is the only limit on how you can make xmcd look.

SGI-like Appearance

The following customized xmcd appearance mimicks the "SGI look".

Installation Instructions

1. Download and install xmcd.
2. Change to your $HOME/.xmcdcfg directory, and then unpack the alt_xmcd.tar.gz file you just downloaded.
3. Copy the screen12.* and screen14.* files to your XLIB/fonts/75dpi directory, then run the mkfontdir command.
4. Start xmcd and see the effects.
5. Make other changes in the XMcd file as you see fit to customize xmcd to your taste.
